TL;DR
The Ten Year Series is not "just for O-Levels."
Past-paper micro-drills build exam-stamina, surface sign-slip patterns and preview A-Level graph & uncertainty skills two years early.
Follow the four-phase plan below to align TYS practice with Weighted Assessments (WAs), bridge IP conceptual leaps and free up bandwidth before CCAs spike.
1 What exactly is the Ten Year Series?
- A set of official past papers (and fully-worked solutions) covering the last ten national examinations.
- Published annually by SAP / EPB and sold only in Singapore bookstores such as Popular and OpenSchoolbag — the 2025 Physics volume spans 2015-2024 papers.
- Edition codes "6091" or "Pure Physics" mirror the current SEAB syllabus.
1.1 Why it still matters for IP Physics
Skill | TYS trigger | IP pay-off |
Equation recognition | Spot \(v^2 = u^2 + 2as\) among MCQ distractors | Instant recall on Sec 3 SUVAT graph derivations |
Graph literacy | Paper 2 data-handling Qs | Spreadsheet \(R = V/I\) LINEST gradient in JC Paper 4 |
Time management | 1 mark : 1.5 min pacing rule | Y3-Y4 WAs & JC block tests have identical rate |
Error diagnosis | Repeat wrong option → log in journal | Cuts careless minus-sign slips by Term 2 |
2 Map TYS chapters to IP WA windows
Term window | IP topics now taught | Best TYS sets | Why this week |
T1 Wk 6-8 (WA 1) | Kinematics, forces | 6091 Paper 1 Q 1-10 (2022-24) | MCQs recycle vector sign traps |
Mar holiday | Work-Energy-Power | 2021 & 2019 Paper 2 Q 4 | Inserts calculus before WA 2 |
T2 Wk 8 (WA 2) | Waves + Light | 2024 Paper 2 Q 8 & 10 | Same ray-diagram verbs |
Jun break | Electricity (basic) | 2020-22 Paper 1 Q 21-30 | Matches Sec 3 circuit lab block |
T3 Wk 9 (WA 3) | Magnetism, EMI | 2018 & 2016 Paper 2 EMI long Q | Few guidebooks cover induction — TYS does |
EOY / Promo | Full syllabus | Sit one full recent paper under 1 h 45 | Best stamina rehearsal |
3 How to wring maximum value from each paper
3.1 The 3-pass micro-drill
- Speed run — 10 MCQs in 12 min; circle guesses.
- Slow review — redo circled Qs, write why the distractor fooled you.
- Transfer note — copy the underlying concept into your error journal.
Example: Mis-picked option C in refraction MCQ because "light speeds up" ⇒ add one-line note under "Optics misconceptions".
3.2 Structured Q dissections
- Colour-code verbs: state, explain, calculate.
- Underline units before number crunching.
- Unit sanity check at the final line — SI only.
3.3 Graph & uncertainty add-on
For any TYS graph question:
- Re-plot the table in Sheets; use
=LINEST()
to extract gradient ± SE. - Round result to the same s.f. as raw data.
- Paste into your practical notebook — instant Paper 4 rehearsal.
(Full method lives in our "Measurement and Uncertainty for IP Physics" guide.)
4 Common TYS traps and fast fixes
Trap | Typical loss | Fix in ≤ 2 min |
Forgetting vertical component \(mg\sin\theta\) on slopes | -3 marks | Sketch triangle, dot-&-colour each component |
Using half range for all data spreads | -2 ACE marks | Switch to LINEST SE when \(n \ge 8\) |
Dropping the negative root of \(v = \sqrt{u^2 + 2as}\) | Wrong projectile sign | Write explicit "±" and tick correct direction |
5 The Four-Phase TYS Master Plan
Phase | Duration | Goal | Daily action |
1 Foundation | 2 weeks | Recall core laws & units | 20 MCQs / night |
2 Build | 4 weeks | Topic mastery & graph skills | 1 structured Q + spreadsheet plot |
3 Sprint | 3 weeks | Exam pacing | 1 full Paper 1 in 50 min alt days |
4 Simulate | 3 weeks pre-exam | Stamina + error-journals | Paper 1 + Paper 2 back-to-back every Sat |
Parents can pin this calendar beside the 2025/26 Master Timeline to avoid CCA clashes.
