Q: What does International Baccalaureate (IB) Physics Tuition: 2025 Guide for Higher Level (HL) & Standard Level (SL) Candidates cover?
A: Major syllabus changes in 2023 mean one Internal Assessment now drives twenty percent of the grade.
TL;DR
The updated DP Physics course (first assessment May 2025) uses two external papers plus one Scientific investigation (IA).
According to the official subject brief, the weightings are Paper 1 = 36%, Paper 2 = 44%, Scientific investigation = 20% (10 hours; max 3,000 words).
In the IB’s May 2025 statistical bulletin, the mean grade is 4.9 (HL) and 4.2 (SL); 19.2% (HL) and 10.3% (SL) scored a 7-so data-based questions, units/uncertainties, and a clean IA write-up matter.
Status: IB Physics updates + Physics subject brief + DP/CP Final Statistical Bulletin (May 2025) checked 2026-01-26 - two external papers (Paper 1A MCQ + Paper 1B data-based; Paper 2 short + extended responses) plus Scientific investigation (IA) at 20% remain the published structure; grade distributions shift each session, so use the latest IB statistical bulletin for the newest numbers.
1 | IB Physics (first assessment 2025) - what actually changed
The updated DP Physics course moved to a simpler, more skills-forward assessment model:
- Only two external exams. Paper 1 includes multiple-choice and data-based questions; Paper 2 includes short-answer questions plus extended response questions. (Option topics are removed; some option content was incorporated into the course.)
- One internal assessment. The Scientific investigation is an open-ended IA, assessed through a written report (max 3,000 words). IB guidance also allows limited collaboration (for example, similar methodologies) as long as each student’s data is unique.
