Private Candidate Practical FAQ: 15 Questions Parents Always Ask

Registration and eligibility

1. Can my child pass the practical exam without formal training?

Technically, SEAB does not test whether you attended training during the practical exam itself - the exam paper is the same for all candidates. However, practical exams test hands-on skills (measuring, drawing, titrating, wiring circuits) that are extremely difficult to develop without supervised lab sessions.

Students who attempt the practical exam without training typically struggle with:

• Apparatus they have never handled before
• Time pressure on techniques that need muscle memory
• Drawing conventions and data presentation formats that need practice

The practical training requirement exists for a reason. We strongly recommend completing the full 4 + 2 (O-Level) or 4 + 4 (A-Level) session programme.

2. What if we miss the April registration window?

If you miss the SEAB registration window (7–20 April 2026), you cannot sit science subjects in the 2026 exam diet. You will need to wait for the 2027 registration cycle.

There is no late registration option for private candidates. SEAB is strict about this deadline. Set a calendar reminder for early April and ensure your practical training is underway before registration opens.

3. Can my child register for science subjects without completing practical training first?

At registration, SEAB asks you to declare that you have undergone (or are undergoing) practical training. If you have started training but not completed all sessions, you can still register - but you must complete the full programme before the practical exam in October/November.

If you have not started any training by April, you should not declare that you have undergone practical training, as this is a false declaration. Start training before April.

4. My child took the same science subject last year - do they need practical training again?

SEAB requires a fresh practical training declaration for each exam sitting. Prior sessions from a previous year do not automatically carry over. However, the skills learned in previous sessions do carry over - retakers typically need fewer sessions to reach exam readiness.
