SEAB vs CIE Practicals: Which Rules Apply to You? (Singapore Private Candidates)

TL;DR
SEAB (GCE O-Level and A-Level) and CIE (Cambridge International IGCSE and A-Level) are different exam systems with different practical rules, even though both use Cambridge-set papers.
SEAB has no alternative-to-practical option - you must sit the hands-on paper.
CIE may offer Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical) for some subjects, depending on your exam centre.
If you are a private candidate in Singapore, check which system you are registered for before starting practical training.

Why this comparison matters

Many private candidates and parents in Singapore confuse two exam systems:

  1. SEAB GCE O-Level and A-Level - the national exams administered by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board. These are "Singapore-Cambridge" qualifications.
  2. CIE IGCSE and A-Level - the international exams administered by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE). These are "Cambridge International" qualifications.

Both use Cambridge-set papers, but they have different syllabuses, different practical rules, and different registration processes. The practical requirements - what you must do, whether alternatives exist, and how you register - are fundamentally different.

Getting this wrong means training for the wrong exam format or discovering too late that you needed different practical preparation.
