Paper 5 practical roadmap for Combined Science candidates taking Biology in 5087 or 5088 - the same Biology question appears in both syllabuses.

Use this if Biology is one of your Combined Science components and you need Paper 5 microscopy, food test, and data practice.

This page covers one science component inside Combined Science Paper 5. Practise these habits before switching to your other component.
Paper 5 is weighted 15% of the Combined Science grade. The paper tests your two science components, so practise the component skill first and keep the full Paper 5 timing in mind.
Hypothesis, controls, and method - written before any handling.
Practise this: Name your control and explain what it controls for in one sentence.
Microscope focusing, food tests, biological drawing technique.
Practise this: Draw with single sharp lines and label without arrows crossing.
Drawings with magnification, tables with units, observation phrasing.
Practise this: Always state magnification using the formula image size / actual size.
Conclusions linked to data, biological reasoning, refinements.
Practise this: Reference a specific reading from your data when stating each conclusion.
Combined Science biology still rewards the same core biology skills, but the training is organised to fit the shorter Paper 5 rhythm.
Combined Science students need the same biology habits as pure students, but in a shorter paper. We therefore stabilise drawings, food tests, and graphs early.
Typical practicals: Biological drawings and specimen recording; Leaf starch and food tests; Basic graph and table discipline
After this stage: Students can present standard biology observations clearly and bank the routine presentation marks in Paper 5.
The middle block covers the experiment families that are most likely to reappear with small twists rather than as exact repeats.
Typical practicals: Osmosis and plasmolysis; Diffusion comparisons; Enzyme investigations with controlled variables
After this stage: Students can explain why the result changed and connect the experiment to the underlying process instead of just describing the setup.
Sessions then mix photosynthesis, respiration, transport, and planning so the paper feels like a connected biology task rather than a list of chapters.
Typical practicals: Photosynthesis practicals; Respiration and transport tasks; Planning and sources-of-error prompts
After this stage: Students can switch from observations to explanation to planning without losing their structure.
The final stage compresses the skills into Combined Science timing, where students have to be efficient because another science component sits in the same paper.
Typical practicals: Mixed food-test and graph routines; Drawing plus planning combinations; Timed Combined Science biology practical sets
After this stage: Students can finish the biology component of Paper 5 with cleaner execution and less time lost deciding what to write.

Share your level, subject, and whether you need Paper 3, Paper 4, or Paper 5 practice. We will point you to the right lab group or class timing.
Open only the detail you need: attendance records, lab evidence, or another science route.
SEAB states that private candidates for science subjects with laboratory-based components must either have sat the same subject before, or attend a course of instruction in science practical and complete it before the practical paper.
Eclat’s practical sessions provide supervised lab training plus centre-held attendance records. Where relevant, we may also issue an internal attendance or completion document, but the SEAB-facing requirement is the declaration supported by the centre’s records.

This page is for Combined Science candidates taking the biology component in 5087 (Phys+Bio) or 5088 (Chem+Bio). Pure-Biology 6093 candidates should use the dedicated 6093 practical page.
Yes. SEAB confirms the Biology questions in Paper 5 are common across 5087 and 5088. Drilling once benefits both candidate groups.
Key practical skills overlap, but Combined Science Paper 5 is 1 h 30 min, 30 marks, 15% of grade, and tests both your science components. Pure Biology Paper 3 is 1 h 50 min, 40 marks, and 20% - testing only Biology.
Yes. Candidates can start with selected modules (for example microscopy or planning-heavy sessions) and then add mock practical blocks later.
For practical, lab, and experiment courses, Eclat Institute keeps centre-held attendance records and may also issue an internal attendance or completion document based on participation and internal assessment.
