Q: What does H3 Math Versus Further Math in A-Level cover?
A: Should your IP child pick H3 Math or H2 Further Math?
TL;DR
H3 Mathematics (syllabus 9820) is a proof-heavy extension to H2 Mathematics with one 3-hour paper (80 marks, all questions compulsory); grades are Distinction/Merit/Pass/Ungraded and H3 does not contribute to the 70-point UAS (it appears separately on the A-Level certificate).
H2 Further Mathematics (syllabus 9649) adds a second full H2 of content (multivariable calculus, matrices, numerical methods, stats) and counts as a full H2 in the 70-point UAS (see SEAB syllabus and UAS grade table).
The better choice hinges on (1) target course, (2) proof stamina vs applied breadth, and (3) timetable real estate alongside Physics and CCAs.

Keep the baseline H2 sequence and bridging posts in our H2 Maths Notes hub.

If you are still testing whether the H2 foundation is stable enough for either pathway, use our H2 Maths tuition Singapore page as a checklist for Paper 1 and Paper 2 pacing, written reasoning, and graphing-calculator habits.

Status: SEAB's current H3 Mathematics (9820) and H2 Further Mathematics (9649) syllabus PDFs are labelled for 2026. H3 has one 3 h, 80-mark paper with six compulsory questions; H2 Further Math keeps two 3 h, 100-mark papers weighted 50% each.

Treat the rest of this guide as a decision funnel: skim the comparison tables, sanity-check your timetable, then pick the self-study or support plan that patches your specific weak spots before option forms open.

  • H3 Maths is depth; Further Maths is breadth: Decide which kind of stretch fits you.
  • H3 sits outside UAS; Further Maths is a full H2: Check timetable and scoring impact.
  • Proof stamina and workload capacity matter more than prestige: Try one proof-heavy H3 task and one Further Maths topic sample.

Concrete example: If you enjoy proving why a result is true, H3 may fit better. If you want more tools for physics and engineering, Further Maths may fit better.

Decision-tradeoff checkpoint

Use this checkpoint when the answer is not obvious. Many students have one H3 signal and one Further Maths signal at the same time, so the useful question is which risk can be repaired before option forms close.
