Asexual reproduction, mitosis and meiosis
Asexual reproduction produces genetically identical offspring from one parent. Mitosis maintains chromosome number and produces genetically identical cells for growth, repair, and asexual reproduction.
Sexual reproduction fuses nuclei of haploid male and female gametes to form a diploid zygote and produces genetically dissimilar offspring. Meiosis separates homologous chromosome pairs, halves chromosome number, and forms genetically different gametes so fertilisation can restore the diploid number.
Flowering-plant reproduction
In insect-pollinated dicot flowers, petals attract pollinators, anthers are held inside, stigmas are sticky, and pollen is relatively large or sticky. Wind-pollinated flowers tend to have exposed anthers and stigmas and produce abundant small, light pollen. Compare the fresh structures through how they support pollen transfer.
Pollination transfers pollen from anther to stigma and can be self-pollination or cross-pollination. A compatible pollen grain grows a tube through the style, and the male nucleus enters an ovule for fertilisation. Pollination is therefore earlier than fertilisation and does not guarantee it.
Human reproduction, development and HIV
The male system includes testes, scrotum, sperm ducts, prostate gland, urethra, and penis. The female system includes ovaries, oviducts, uterus, cervix, and vagina. Fertilisation normally occurs in an oviduct, and the dividing zygote forms a ball of cells that implants in the uterus lining.
Oestrogen helps rebuild the uterus lining and progesterone helps maintain it after ovulation; cycle length and fertile timing vary naturally. The amniotic sac contains fluid that cushions the fetus. The placenta and umbilical cord support exchange of gases, nutrients, and excretory products. HIV can spread through infected body fluids, and risk is reduced by preventing unsafe fluid exchange and using current testing and medical guidance.
