Sexual reproduction and reproductive systems
Sexual reproduction fuses male and female gamete nuclei to form a zygote, producing genetically dissimilar offspring.
Testes make sperm, the scrotum holds the testes outside the body at a suitable temperature, sperm ducts carry sperm, the prostate adds fluid, and the urethra and penis deliver semen. Ovaries make ova, oviducts carry them and are usual fertilisation sites, the uterus supports development, the cervix is its opening, and the vagina receives sperm and forms the birth canal.
Menstrual cycle, fertilisation, and implantation
The cycle alternates menstruation and ovulation and naturally varies in length. Oestrogen supports rebuilding of the uterine lining, while progesterone maintains it after ovulation. The fertile phase spans the days around ovulation because sperm can remain viable before ovulation and the ovum remains viable for a shorter time afterwards. The relatively infertile phase lies farther from ovulation, especially after the ovum is no longer viable, but it is not a guaranteed safe calendar period because ovulation and cycle length vary.
Fertilisation joins sperm and ovum nuclei in the oviduct. The zygote divides into a ball of cells that reaches the uterus and implants in its wall.
HIV transmission reduction
HIV can be transmitted through infected sexual fluids, blood, shared needles, and from parent to child. It is not spread through ordinary social contact.
Risk is reduced by barrier protection, not sharing needles, screened blood, testing, and effective medical treatment that reduces viral load, together with appropriate care during pregnancy and birth.
