N8: Set language and notation

Set notation describes membership and overlap precisely. Define the universal set first, translate the language into symbols, and fill Venn-diagram intersections before outer regions.

Elements, subsets and complements

An element is one object in a set, while a subset is a set whose every element belongs to a larger set. The complement $A'$ contains elements in the universal set that are not in $A$ . The empty set $\varnothing$ has no elements and differs from $\{0\}$ .

Union and intersection

The union $A\cup B$ contains elements in either set or both. The intersection $A\cap B$ contains only elements common to both sets. In counting, subtract a two-set overlap once after adding both totals.

Venn diagrams

Place values satisfying all relevant conditions in the deepest overlap first. Then fill single-set regions and finally the outside region. Add every disjoint region to check against the universal total.

$n(A\cup B)=n(A)+n(B)-n(A\cap B)$	Count a union without double-counting the overlap.

Worked examples

Example 1: In a class of $40$ students, $24$ study Chemistry, $18$ study Biology and $9$ study both. How many study neither?

Chemistry only is $24-9=15$ .
Biology only is $18-9=9$ , so the union has $15+9+9=33$ .
Subtract from the universal total: $40-33=7$ .

Answer: $7$ students study neither subject.

Example 2: Let $U=\{1,2,3,4,5,6\}$ and $A=\{2,4,6\}$ . Find $A'$ .

Begin with all elements of $U$ .
Remove the elements that belong to $A$ .
Retain $1,3,5$ .

Answer: $A'=\{1,3,5\}$ .
