Singapore Biology Olympiad 2026: Public Format and Status
What the official public SBO overview confirms about theory, practical shortlisting and IBO training, plus the 2026 details that remain unpublished.
Q: When is SBO 2026, and what is its format? A: The public Singapore Institute of Biology overview describes an initial theory test, a practical test for shortlisted students, and later training selection. The checked public pages did not provide a usable exact 2026 date, registration deadline, paper duration, or award schedule. Candidates should follow their school's current circular.
What the public overview confirms
The Singapore Biology Olympiad is the senior national biology competition in this cluster. The public SiBiol material says it has run annually since 2000 and describes:
- an initial theory test;
- a practical test for shortlisted students; and
- a later training and selection stage connected to Singapore's International Biology Olympiad participation.
That is a general programme description. It does not establish the exact 2026 timetable or the number of students progressing at each stage.
What remains unconfirmed for 2026
The checked public pages did not publish a complete current:
- competition date and venue;
- registration window and entry fee;
- detailed eligibility rule;
- theory or practical duration;
- paper weighting;
- award thresholds; or
- national-team selection formula.
Ask the school's Biology teacher-in-charge for the current circular. Do not reuse a past year's month, fee, or format as if it were confirmed for 2026.
Preparation priorities
SBO preparation usually requires breadth across cell biology, genetics and molecular biology, physiology, ecology, evolution, biochemistry, and data interpretation. Start with secure H2-level foundations, then compare the current competition or IBO syllabus with what school has covered.
For practical preparation, focus on interpreting results, controlling variables, designing fair comparisons, handling biological data, and explaining limitations. The current school instruction should determine any apparatus or technique emphasis.
