Understand the pan, enclosure and display of a lab balance.

  • Distinguish zero from tare, check total load and recognise when a reading is not ready to record.

A lab balance gives a mass reading. Before recording it, know what is on the pan, whether the container is included, and whether the reading has settled. Pressing tare can make a loaded balance display zero; it does not remove the container's physical load.

This guide explains parts and handling decisions for supervised practical work. The assigned balance's instructions and the trainer's directions control its capacity, suitable samples, setup and cleaning. A photo cannot tell you those limits or instructions.

Recognise the parts before weighing

The pan receives the object or an approved sample container. An enclosure can protect the weighing area from moving air; its exact purpose and operation depend on the model. The display shows a reading. Check the setup and wait for the reading to settle before recording it. METTLER TOLEDO's analytical balance guidance explains draft-shield use and waiting for a settled indication.

Balance with numbered markers pointing to the enclosure, pan area and display; a gloved hand is touching the weighing area.
  1. Enclosure. Surrounds the weighing area; follow the actual model's instructions for opening and closing it.
  2. Pan area. Receives the object or approved container within the balance's load and material limits.
  3. Display. Shows the reading. Follow the briefing on how to check that it has settled before recording it.

The stock photograph shows loading or adjustment, not a settled reading. The hand remains visible so the picture does not imply that this is the recording stage. Photograph by
