Understand a bath's temperature-control role, sample equilibration and supported vessels.

  • Distinguish bath water from coolant, reagent and displacement water.

A water bath warms or cools a sample through the water around its container. The bath's setting or display is not automatically a direct measurement of every sample inside it.

The actual bath, water specification, fill limits, sample containers and operating conditions must be chosen together. Follow the trainer's setup and the manufacturer's instructions rather than treating any container of warm water as interchangeable with a laboratory bath.

Separate the bath from the sample

IKA's heating-bath range and JULABO's water-bath range illustrate that temperature-control equipment has model-specific construction and controls. These product pages do not tell us which bath Eclat uses.

Water around a sample vessel can transfer heat without being part of the sample. Keep those roles distinct. A tube containing prepared enzyme solution should not receive bath water simply because both are liquids in the same apparatus.

Supports must hold the assigned vessels without tipping, floating unexpectedly or blocking the intended operation. The permitted immersion depth and lid arrangement depend on the bath and sample method. Do not improvise a weight, cap or holder to overcome a mismatch.

Check the sample conditions, not just the dial

Heat transfer takes time. A newly introduced sample may differ in temperature from the bath even when the bath display is steady. Follow the lesson's instructions on how long to wait and how to check the sample temperature. The waiting time depends on the setup.
