Follow the liquid and vapour through a reflux setup.

  • Understand condenser cooling, controlled heating, observations and when to stop and ask the trainer.

Reflux lets a reaction mixture be heated while much of its volatile liquid returns to the flask. Vapour rises into a condenser, cools to liquid and runs back down. Understanding that route makes the apparatus easier to explain and a failed cooling system easier to recognise.

This guide explains a supervised atmospheric-pressure setup. The trainer supplies the exact reaction, quantities, equipment and handling instructions. It is not a recipe for an unknown mixture. Read Lab safety starts before the experiment before the apparatus briefing.

What reflux does in H2 Chemistry

The 2026 H2 Chemistry syllabus, 9476, includes reflux apparatus in its practical scope on page 36. A large-scale organic synthesis involving reflux, distillation and purification is not expected in the practical examination. Learning the technique and explaining reaction conditions remain different from expecting a full synthesis task in every Paper 4.

Heating can help a reaction proceed at a useful rate. The condenser reduces loss of volatile material during that heating. Reflux does not itself establish completion, product identity or purity. Those conclusions need the evidence specified for the reaction.

Trace the setup before heating

The flask holds the mixture. The upright condenser provides a cooled surface for rising vapour, and gravity returns condensate to the same flask. This differs from
