Environmental fieldwork begins with a question that can be answered by evidence. A long equipment list is not a plan. A sound plan connects the aim, hypothesis, variables, sampling strategy, measurements, repeats, safety and analysis before anyone enters the field.

This is the first note in Eclat's fieldwork skills sequence for Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management 0680. The five-note sequence organises syllabus section 5.4 and AO3 for teaching. It is not a claim that Cambridge publishes five numbered practical units or requires a separately timetabled fieldwork examination.

From an issue to a testable aim

A broad issue such as “litter on the coast” needs to become a focused aim. A useful aim names what will be measured, where it will be measured and, where appropriate, what comparison will be made:

To investigate whether the number of litter items per quadrat changes with distance from the beach entrance.

A hypothesis is a testable prediction. It should identify the expected relationship and, when possible, give environmental reasoning:

Litter abundance will decrease with distance from the entrance because visitor density is likely to be highest near the access point.

The hypothesis is not a conclusion. Data may support it, contradict it or be too limited for a confident decision.

Variables and fair comparisons

The independent variable is the factor used to organise the comparison, such as distance from a footpath or sampling location. The dependent variable is the measured response, such as plant species count, litter abundance or soil moisture. Control variables are conditions kept consistent so that the comparison remains meaningful.

In fieldwork, many environmental conditions cannot be controlled. Instead, standardise what can be standardised and record possible confounding factors. A stream investigation might use the same kick-sampling time and net mesh at every site while recording recent rainfall, shade and channel width. Do not pretend that natural sites are identical.

Write variables operationally. “Pollution” is too vague; “nitrate concentration in mg per litre measured with the same test method” states what the data mean. “Biodiversity” may require species richness, abundance or an index, depending on the question.

Pilot studies

A pilot study is a small preliminary trial. It can reveal that the quadrat is too small, a question is ambiguous, the sampling interval misses a transition, a meter exceeds its range or the full method takes too long. The pilot should lead to a named change. Saying “do a pilot to improve the method” earns less credit than explaining what is tested and how the result changes the final design.
