Environmental fieldwork should collect useful evidence without creating unreasonable risk or avoidable environmental harm. Safety is part of the method, not a sentence added at the end. Ethical practice also protects participants, organisms, habitats and the credibility of the evidence.
This Eclat note develops Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 AO3, which requires candidates to plan fieldwork and explain how it can be carried out safely. Ethics and habitat protection are taught here as sound investigation practice, not as a separate Cambridge-numbered syllabus topic.
Hazard, risk and control
A hazard is something with the potential to cause harm. Risk considers the likelihood and severity of that harm in the planned context. A control measure reduces the likelihood, severity or exposure. The remaining risk after controls is the residual risk.
“Wear gloves” is not a complete risk assessment. First identify the hazard and who or what may be harmed, then choose a control that acts on the cause. Gloves may help with contaminated material but will not prevent a fall on a steep, unstable bank.
Plan controls in a sensible order:
- Avoid the hazard where possible, such as moving sampling away from an unstable cliff.
- Change the method or timing, such as visiting a shore during a safer tide window.
- Use barriers, safe access routes or supervision.
- Establish communication, group, hygiene and emergency procedures.
- Use suitable personal protective equipment as an additional control.
Personal protective equipment is useful, but it should not be the only response when the site or method can be made safer.
Common field hazards
Water and weather
Streams, coasts and wetlands may involve deep or fast water, slippery surfaces, tides and sudden weather changes. Check forecasts and tide information, define safe boundaries, work in supervised groups and avoid entering water where the method does not require it. Stop if conditions exceed the plan.
Heat, sun, lightning, heavy rain and cold can affect both safety and readings. Carry suitable clothing, water and communication equipment. Record weather because it can also explain changes in animal activity, soil moisture or instrument response.
Terrain, traffic and access
Steep slopes, loose rocks, thorns, unstable banks and road crossings need route planning and appropriate footwear. Obtain permission before entering private or restricted land. A good sample point is not usable if reaching it exposes the team to unreasonable danger.
Biological and contamination hazards
Avoid direct contact with unknown organisms, faeces, sharp litter or polluted water. Cover cuts, use tools rather than hands where appropriate, wash hands and disinfect reusable equipment. Do not taste field samples. If the risk cannot be controlled adequately, use observations or existing data instead.
