Topic 2 develops power, current, voltage and resistance in series circuits. These notes follow only Pearson 4SS0 Issue 4. Mains safety wiring, energy calculations, parallel-circuit rules and electrostatics belong to broader routes and are excluded.

Alternating and direct current

A cell or battery supplies direct current, or d.c., which has one direction. Mains electricity supplies alternating current, or a.c., whose direction repeatedly reverses. The distinction concerns current direction over time, not whether the source is “strong.”

Electrical power is the rate of energy transfer and is related to current and voltage:

Power is in watts, current in amperes and voltage in volts. A device with a larger power rating transfers more energy each second when operating at that rating.

Current, charge and electron flow

Current is rate of flow of charge:
