Safe practical planning identifies a hazard, explains who or what could be harmed, estimates the relevant risk, and chooses a control that reduces likelihood or severity without undermining the investigation. Pearson 4SS0 written questions reward controls and improvements that fit the actual Biology, Chemistry or Physics method. This note does not replace teacher instructions or a school risk assessment.

Hazard, risk and control

A hazard is something with the potential to cause harm. Risk combines how likely the harm is with how serious it could be under the proposed conditions. A control measure reduces exposure, likelihood or consequence.

“Hydrochloric acid is a risk” is imprecise. A better statement is: dilute hydrochloric acid can irritate eyes and skin; use the specified low concentration, wear eye protection, keep the container stable, rinse splashes promptly according to laboratory procedure, and clean spills using the instructed method.

Safety statements should be proportionate. Do not call every material “dangerous,” and do not list goggles as the only response to every hazard. Engineering or procedural controls can be more important than personal protective equipment.

Biology contexts

Food tests involve hot water, alkaline biuret reagent and flammable ethanol. Heat Benedict's mixtures in a water bath and point tubes away from people. Keep ethanol away from ignition sources and heat it only through a hot-water bath when removing chlorophyll from leaves. Use small reagent quantities and dispose of mixtures as instructed.

Enzyme and yeast work should use appropriate school cultures and clean technique. Avoid ingestion, cover cuts, disinfect work areas where required, and wash hands. Yeast respiration can produce gas, so do not completely seal a rigid vessel without a safe gas outlet. Water baths should be stable and handled to avoid burns.

Quadrat surveys need site-specific controls. Uneven ground, road edges, water, thorns, stinging organisms and weather may matter more than laboratory goggles. Define safe boundaries, work in groups where required, wear suitable footwear and avoid damaging habitats. Sampling should minimise trampling and unnecessary organism disturbance.

Chemistry contexts

Chromatography solvents may be volatile or flammable. Use the specified solvent in small amounts, cover the vessel, avoid inhaling vapour, keep it away from flames and dispose of it correctly. Do not select a solvent merely because it separates pigments well if its hazard is unsuitable for school use.

The oxygen-in-air method may involve heated copper or another reactive substance. Hot apparatus can look cold, so allow cooling and use appropriate handling tools. Keep connections secure and never seal a heated gas system in a way that creates unsafe pressure. A phosphorus method presents substantial fire and chemical hazards and belongs only in a teacher-controlled procedure with the school's approved risk controls.
