When are O-Level results released?
The 2025 O-Level results were released in January 2026. The 2026 O-Level results (for the October/November 2026 sitting) are expected in January 2027.
After results release, the JAE application window opens within days. Have a plan ready before results day so you can act quickly.

Key aggregates
Your O-Level results are used to compute several aggregates for different admission exercises:
2-year programme: JC leads to A-Levels, which is the most direct route to local university
Subject specialisation: Choose between Science and Arts streams, or a hybrid combination
IP schools: Integrated Programme (IP) schools are not accessed via JAE - they are entered at the secondary school level. See our IP schools guide
Option 2: Polytechnic via JAE
If your ELR2B2 meets the cut-off for your target polytechnic course, apply through JAE.

Polytechnic cut-off points
Cut-offs vary widely by course and polytechnic. Popular courses (Nursing, Business, IT) tend to have lower (more competitive) cut-offs. For the IGP (Indicative Grade Profile), check each polytechnic's website.
Option 3: ITE
If your results do not meet JC or polytechnic cut-offs, ITE (Institute of Technical Education) offers structured programmes with clear progression pathways.

Direct-Entry Scheme to Polytechnic Programme (DPP)
DPP allows N-Level holders to do a 2-year Higher Nitec at ITE, then progress directly to the second year of a related polytechnic diploma programme. This is relevant for N-Level holders, not O-Level holders.
Why ITE is a valid option
ITE programmes are industry-focused and lead to recognised qualifications. The ITE-to-Poly-to-University pathway, while longer, is a well-established route. Many successful professionals started at ITE.
PFP is a one-year foundation programme at polytechnic, designed for N-Level holders with strong results. After completing PFP, students enter the first year of their chosen polytechnic diploma course.
PFP is for N-Level holders, not O-Level holders. If you are an O-Level holder, apply directly to polytechnic via JAE instead.

Why retaking works well at O-Level
You can combine best results: Your L1R5 or ELR2B2 is computed using the best grade for each subject across all sittings. You only need to retake subjects where you want to improve.
Targeted improvement: If you scored A1 in most subjects but C6 in one, retaking just that one subject can dramatically lower your aggregate.
Same certificate: Private candidate results are identical to school candidate results.

Science practical requirement
If you are retaking a science subject, you satisfy SEAB's practical training requirement if you previously sat the same subject. No additional practical training is required, though refresher sessions are recommended.
Private institutions offer O-Level preparatory courses and alternative diploma pathways. These include Spring College, Stalford Academy, and others.
Overseas education
O-Level results are recognised internationally. Some students apply directly to overseas institutions, foundation programmes, or international baccalaureate (IB) programmes.
Skills-based certifications
For students who want to enter the workforce directly, industry certifications (IT, digital marketing, trades) offer an alternative to further academic study. WSG (Workforce Singapore) and SkillsFuture programmes may be relevant.

How close am I to my target? If you are 1 - 3 points away, retaking 1 - 2 subjects is efficient. If you need large improvements across many subjects, consider alternative pathways.
Do I know what I want to study? If you have a clear career goal, choose the pathway that gets you there most efficiently (JC → uni, or poly → career/uni).
What are my strengths? If you learn better through hands-on work, polytechnic may suit you better than JC. If you thrive in academic study, JC is a strong choice.
What is my timeline? JC (2 years) + university (3 - 4 years) is a 5 - 6 year commitment. Polytechnic (3 years) can lead directly to a career.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply to JC and retake O-Levels at the same time? Yes. You can accept a JC or poly posting and still register to retake specific O-Level subjects as a private candidate. However, if you are enrolled as a school candidate in a JC, you cannot register as a private candidate for O-Levels in the same year. Check SEAB's eligibility rules.
Can I combine results from different years? Yes. JC, polytechnic, and ITE admissions will use the best grade for each subject across all your O-Level sittings.
How long after O-Levels can I retake? There is no time limit. You can retake O-Levels at any point, as long as you meet the minimum age requirement (15 as of 1 Jan of the exam year).
Should I retake all subjects or just specific ones? Retake only the subjects that will improve your aggregate. There is no benefit to retaking subjects where you already achieved your target grade.
Will JCs or polytechnics know I retook? They will see results from multiple sittings. This is normal and not viewed negatively. Many successful students retook specific subjects to improve their aggregate.
What if my L1R5 is on the borderline for my target JC? Apply anyway. Cut-off points fluctuate each year. If you are not admitted, consider a less competitive JC, polytechnic, or retaking 1 - 2 subjects.
